Photographs by Shaun O'Boyle

Wendy, Aisha and I recently made a trip to South florida. I hadn't been there since childhood winter vacations when Mom and Dad would load all four of us kids into the Cutlas and drive for 3 agonizing mostly boring days out of snowy New England down to sunny florida.

On this trip we spent time in the Everglades, Key West and Fort Lauderdale. My first impression on this trip was how ugly South Florida has become. The whole greater Miami Fort Lauderdale area has been paved over; strip malls, condos and housing developments flow in an endless stream along the roads and turnpikes. Wetlands and the outskirts of the Everglades are being drained and massive housing projects are being built on top of it. The good news is that the Everglades is still a beautiful place to visit and should be part of any visit to South Florida. Visit it while you can.
