Cape Canaveral & Kennedy Space Center

Photographs by Shaun O'Boyle 2008

The Air Force has preserved the Apollo 1 launch pad at launch complex 34 at Cape Canaveral in memory of the three astronauts, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee, who lost their lives here in a fire on January 27, 1967 during a routine training exercise. You can see flowers left by the pad in the foreground. Apollo 7, the first manned mission in the Apollo program, was successfully launched at this pad 21 months after the Apollo 1 tragedy, for an 11 day earth orbital mission.
